/ about
Alemany Market in San Francisco is a vibrant hub of local culture and culinary delights. Nestled in the heart of the city, this bustling market offers a diverse array of fresh produce, artisanal foods, and unique treasures. From farm-fresh fruits and vegetables to specialty spices, visitors can immerse themselves in a feast for the senses. With its rich history dating back to the early 20th century, Alemany Market continues to be a beloved destination for both locals and tourists alike, showcasing the vibrant tapestry of San Francisco's food scene.

Our redesign of the market is centered around the community of the existing market. We want to embrace the history of the market and the elements that are loved by its current users, while also improving the functionality of the market and adding new social spaces.
/ my role
I was the lead architect, responsible for the overall design on the structure. Using my UX background, I decided to run a site research study to understand the needs of the people using the market and incorporate their needs in the redesign of the market. I was responsible for the entire Revit model and concept diagrams.
/ gathering insights
We began our design process by interviewing the users of the market, both farmers and customers, and asked them what is currently working and not working at the market. Some of our key findings were: loading docks near market stalls were super useful, the murals on the market stalls were used to find loved ventures, there was no place to sit and eat, the bathrooms were really small, there were not enough stalls for all of the vendors.
